I don't think you need that AL-KO thing with the factory fitted tow bar. The car's ESC system should have stabilizer software designed to prevent trailer sway. It's mentioned in the manual you linked, on the page 185 and 275. However, there is an asterisk which suggest that it's only available in some markets. Which ones, I don't know.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. My last 3 cars have all had ESC tailored towing programs as well, which, AFAIK brakes the vehicle when there is a speed wobble detected.

The AKS3004 is a stability aid. It essentially uses pads, similar to brake pads, to clamp around the towing hitch, thus damping the movements of the trailer and preventing a speed wobble from occurring in the first place. You don't grease the towing hitch and you have to remove all paint, wax, rust, etc from the tow ball before use or it contaminates the pads.

It's a very widely used device on caravans, indeed I doubt there is a caravan made in the last 7 years that doesn't use this type of hitch.

Thanks,

Flak

Thanks, wiz... The clearance on my BMW was very tight, and the Touareg isn't much better!

Did you use wet and dry to remove the paint before you used it?

You did right not getting the pano roof. My Treg has it and I (and others) have had no end of problems. From leaking drains to it failing to open and needing 'realigning'...

How do you find towing with the Ateca? On paper and in reviews it looks great. What weight is your van?

Can I be really cheeky and ask you to take a look at my other thread in this board and check out your boot sticker?

Hi Flak

I did use wet n dry - and do so before every trip. If you know of a solution to keeping the ball rust-free....

Prior to the Ateca I had 2.2l Honda with manual 6 speed. The van has an MTPLM of 1600kg - and I am usually within 100kg of that.
Tows very well... love the dsg and the extra power...
Of course, the 4wd is good in the wet...

I have replied to another of your posts- was it the correct one...

Cheers....
