Rear wiper chatter

Hi everyone.

Does anyone's rear wiper 'chatter' noisily across the screen rather than a smooth wipe in anything but reasonably heavy rain? I have cleaned the blade and the rear window several times but the fault still persists.

Can the pressure of the wiper on the glass be reduced? Or does anyone one have any other suggestions to fix the problem?

Many thanks, Wilber6

Hi, mines silent - wouldn't know it was in motion

Yep, exactly the same problem. Annoyingly, even when I try and avoid it happening I have no control. If I clean the front screen and then put the car in reverse to get out of the drive, the rear wiper swipes whether I want it to or not. Unsuspecting passengers can even jump with surprise at how loud it is, especially the back seat ones. I'll go for the Bosch replacement as well.

Had the exact same problem on my A3, on this car it seems fine so far.
As the rest said, replace it with a Bosch and you'll be fine. (you shouldnt have to, but OEM is not that great)

I even had to get the fronts sorted after a few months because the drivers side wasn't making contact with the screen properly and leaving big smears. The rear on my Mitsubishi ASX split early on as well. I just expect it.

I have the same problem, and smearing on the fronts after 1 year.

It's possible that the dealers may have better quality than factory-fit, but I bet you'd be paying handsomely for it!

I'd suggest, as Matthijs82 did. Get some Bosch Aeros from Amazon or so for half the price. Great refills and they'll last better. I think the Ateca is:
Front: A864S
Rear: A282H

I have that problem on other cars. It is sometimes due to the fact that the wiper arm is not parallel to the glass surface, so the blade flicks over on wat and not the other i.e.its being pushed across the glass no dragged. the solution is to bend the arm so that it is parallel to the glass. just a slight adjustment across the arm will do the trick .Works every time for me.

Good morning everyone.

I took the advice of other forum members, and they came up with the goods once again. I bought a replacement Bosch Aerotwin rear wiper from Ebay (£12.00 in Halfords, £5.47 on Ebay). It literally took 30 seconds to remove the old one and fit the new one. The wipe is now totally silent and smooth, no hint of chattering like previous. An easy job well done!

Mine arrived yesterday, £4.80 from Amazon with free delivery... It took 3 days to arrive but it's no longer available at that price. It's now £6.20 with Prime delivery.

Haven't fitted it yet as I've been ill...

Had the rear wiper chatter on mine soon after delivery it irritated me that I should spend money on a replacement so soon on a new vehicle, so after a close look figured if I removed and reversed the rubber insert it might cure the problem bingo and in the last 15 months silence .
