The knife is a bit OTT to open it - something wide and blunt, twist it and the cover just pops open. If you've got reasonably small fingers you can get those in it pulls apart pretty easily, although maybe ours was easier as it's been done a few times.

The existing battery does really fly out when you release it from under the nib holding it - so prepare to catch it! Apart from anything else you don't want a child / dog / cat etc to find it.

Watching that video I'm surprised he didn't cut the end of his finger off.

I shaved a piece of 6mm dowel to the shape of a screwdriver end, no problems opening the case, and no splinters.
