If your "normal" trips are under 10 miles, you would be well to avoid a diesel as they don't tend to get warm enough and suffer premature failure (true of all car manufacturers and models, not just the Ateca). Also, treat all quoted fuel efficiency figures with a heavy pinch of salt - they are usually unachievable in real-world driving. My wife just drove to Norfolk from Berkshire, and she averaged 42mpg in the 1.5TSI.

Don't forget that if you aren't doing huge numbers of miles (tens of thousands) then the cash saving on mpg is actually not that material. e.g. at 6000 miles per year, the total cost saving from 30mpg to 40mpg equates to around ÂŁ300 per year, or 82p a day at current petrol costs.
