Could be good if anyone is nearby and can get down - it's very short notice though.

Autocar and What Car? have teamed up with SEAT to give readers a chance to take a first look at the new Ateca before it hits the showrooms.

If you're in Cardiff on Wednesday July 27, the Ateca will be on display in St David's Dewi Sant Shopping Centre right in the centre of Cardiff. You'll be able to have a close-up look, and find out how it meets your needs. The team from Auto Car and What Car will also be there all day.

EDIT:

A new date and location has been added:

Just had an e-mail from one of the dealers I originally contacted saying that they hoped to have a car to look at in the show room on the 10th Sept, but that this date was as yet unconfirmed. They also gave a price list of the various models and stated that there were still First Edition models awaiting an order.

It's a pity that they haven't had more advance warning on cars on tour like publishing on their website site where the car is visiting so you have proper advance warning. My partner still hasn't seen it yet although I've seen in twice and put a deposit down. So whilst the Tiguan got the thumbs up such permission hasn't been granted on the Ateca.

I was sort of assuming it would be in all dealers in September. I think dealers have also upped their selling game on this one of recent. What we don't know is how much of the chilling off, of consumer spend has affected pre orders and what benchmarks there would be for these. I suspect a lot of people will hold off placing an order till they have seen one or driven one. For premium branded cars people will order in advance, for more cost conscious Seat drivers I guess they are more likely to follow the crowd and want that test drive. That finance package etc. The latter was only recently revealed.

PS you know when you are a select few when your Google search keeps bringing up your own stuff. I see my pictures now :).

On Ateca spotting, when they came to pick up the white one in Essex, when it was picked up the next day, they had a second white one on the trailer, was told that today. So we know there has been two white ones, a rhodium grey with the panoramic roof plus the orange on the road. All are LHD, only the orange one is on the road, the rest are exhibition cars, assuming the second white one wasn't on the road.

I was told by Seat in June that they would be doing shows with them till the launch so this will have been what was meant. Presume when there isn't a show they lend them to dealers for a day with the cars doing the rounds.

Got into city today and found the Ateca!! :D
Had a good play with everything, and a good chat with a lady there who said she was from Seat and worked on the design team.

Got to say I love it. Well pleased I went ahead and ordered one now! The interior feels really upmarket, real quality finish. Love the touch screen.
Set the seat to my position then got into the back, tons of legroom.. Boot is huge.

That looks distinctly like the last one I sat in. It is a nice car although I didn't get the same buzz off siting in it the last time than the first :). I didn't find DAB on the car, I don't know whether they drop it for some European markets.

I remixed my pictures and edited them to look arte. They start to look like publicity ones at that stage. I'll put them down below.

PS I've bought my USB leads ready, don't do wireless charging. One long for the tablet to get it on the back seat, one for the smartphone for up front, nylon type. Two 128 GB SD cards, converted my satnav destinations for import. I just need the car.

Yeah looking forward to having the full link/ android auto, the lady from seat went thru it with me, and said it's brilliant, though I suppose she would lol. It does look good though!
Why pay extra for nav when you can clone your phones google maps onto the touch screen!!

The guy there from one of the mags said it's the best handling SUV he's driven, reckons it handles more like a hatchback, said it's far better than the Sportage, Kadjar or Qashqai.

Didn't look for DAB, turned radio on and saw a load of tiles with station logos, and then left radio to fiddle with nav, settings etc..
The Seat lady did tell me it was a Spanish spec model.

You can upload radio station graphics and front screen pictures - think so it turn on with your favourite. The radio station one is for when it's not known to the system. I know this since Leon people do it. The VW site provides an updated set of graphics.

Ah well I'm paying for full full satnav since it's my pet subject subject :). One is not always connected to mobile and if abroad you might not want to pay high fees, although I think you get a basic satnav with the base model in any case, just not the one with the SSD, although best to check the manual for that. I was hand out satnav POIs at Fairhead in Ireland to Thai-landers who wanted to know where the best car park was for viewing but had no signal so they took a camera phone picture of my GPS app for uploading to Google once they got back in connection again.

I would like the ability to upload POIs to the headend as you can do with Japanese satnav but development has taken an alternative path in this country. There you search and plan your route on you mobile app in your home or wherever or even her using Google maps and street view, save the coordinates and push them to the cars system via blu tooth or just re enter them when you get to the car.

The Ateca manuals are here:

http://www.seat.com/owners/your-seat/manuals-offline/manuals.html?model=Ateca(2017)&id=72&category=1

The basic satnav as I recall doesn't allow you to upload your own POIs and by that token you can't get safety camera alerts. The plus system gives you that flexibility but obviously at a much higher cost. That's how I remember it. Some people on the Leon site don't like copying music over to the SSD although that's optional you can play from the SD slot. Obviously with full link / Android auto you can play from your device. With one of them or may be all options, plead I can't be bothered to look it up, you can put the car onto a wifi network and access a DNLA server and play stuff that way. That server can be your phone, Android since DNLA isn't supported too well on iOS (teethered) or your home network and enjoy you home music library whilst washing the car etc.

It's suppose to handle better than the Tiguan which is why the guy from Autobild on the Ateca v Tiguan looks unhappy

http://www.autobild.de/artikel/seat-ateca-vw-tiguan-im-test-vergleich-8885089.html

Until I read the transcript he can't understand why the Ateca handles better than the Tiguan.

I suspect the Sportage handles like Korean cars do, not very well. Kadjar has a small boot and range of lower powered engines, they don't do a 4x4 DSG type of dual clutch since the released engines are not powerful enough. The Qashqai if 4x4 is the puesdo rubber band gear box thingey, so discounted that and they are far too common, my neighbour has one for starters. So it was easy enough for me to discount non VW pedigree cars.

I am glad my first edition has the free extra of sat Nav. It will be a back up for Apple maps through CarPlay for me, I wouldn't normally spec on board systems. I find the phone does the job just fine generally. Maybe in future longer unknown trips I may start using the VW nav as its well regarded and looks slick. Also in areas lacking in 3/4G.

I will happily keep my phone plugged in to access my music and video from my own NAS server at home, a secondary bonus to CarPlay not being wireless just yet. Probably a lot of limitations on video but I will play around anyway :) may find a use for the SD card slots as well. Will find the shortest lightning cable I can to keep the tangles and unsightly wires at bay.

DAB wise I think it is unlikely to have been dropped, especially with all the other technology kit on board. More likely all radio to be DAB based so no distinction of DAB required on the dash. Radio just once again becomes radio, with perhaps just the lack of FM AM the only giveaway. May be completely wrong, not my specialist subject (that would be iOS and CarPlay!!)

Nice pics everyone again btw:)

I went for the nylon USB cables since they don't tangle and you can get them in colours and striped so you can see them in dark corners and wouldn't get lost in the car. I'm intrigued on the DNLA side of things, I think there is a weather app that connects as well although could be the VW.

I will slap SD cards into mine and keep the stuff that I play frequently on the SSD of the Plus. That's got 10gb free, so about 15 CDs of Flac music and the rest on a 128gb card. The First Edition I think is the standard satnav not navigation system plus although that's the one that Leon people go for in the main, dissing the one that costs money. Still the same big screen but less functionality on the navigation side. DAB is on UK cars. The dealer could not get the traffic reports up as well when I said it's not showing them, it showed a cross / shaded out icon. There was something odd on the LHD demo cars on this one.

I shaped the graphics equaliser, the dealer put R1 on, changed it for R2 for me and I opted for R4. I did subject him to Håkon Kornstad last time for the flac test, Eivind Aarset I think for my next test on whether the navigation plus plays 5.1 DVDS, VW equivalent does. Bit of free noisy jazz.

Good thing about google maps is you can download an offline area to the phone so it's always there. I use mine in work daily and often go to poor signal and rural areas and find it a great feature..

That bit is handy if you know you are going to be out of range. I use a German home brew app for general navigation that you use captured tiles from assorted tile servers for off line use in foreign parts. I do contribute to Openstreet and put details on Google Maps. Openstreet is quite therapeutic stitching together tracks, naming places and putting on features. That's my preoccupation with getting coordinates into the cars satnav since it has to be integrated with my general / hiking app. That is a weakness that you have to do coordinate conversion to get the normal decimal coordinates into it, although this seems common for built in car satnav as opposed to standalone ones.
