Our verdict

The new Seat Ateca takes yet another win over our old favourite the Nissan Qashqai, albeit by a smaller margin with this 1.6-litre diesel engine than with the 2.0-litre diesel.

We like the fact the Ateca brings driver enjoyment to the small SUV class. Putting a smile on your face isn't all it does well, though - it has a solid interior, more than enough space for you and your family and an excellent array of both standard and optional safety kit to protect everyone on board. While the 2.0-litre diesel is a better buy, the 1.6-litre is still a thoroughly recommendable package.

Running costs are one area where the Qashqai still rules. Ultra-low CO2 emissions and leasing bills put this 1.5-litre diesel model bang on the money if you're a company car driver, and while it might not be as pin-sharp to drive on B-roads as the Ateca, its more relaxed demeanour will appeal to anyone who likes a quiet life. Spend some money on options, such as the touchscreen infotainment and safety pack, and you'll have a very fine car indeed.

That leaves the Vauxhall Mokka X. We'd hoped this facelift would have moved it up the pecking order, but dynamically that certainly isn't the case. Yes, it's relatively nippy, but its power delivery is inconsistent and the way the Mokka X rides, handles and suppresses noise all disappoint. Redemption comes from the fact it's cheaper to buy, reasonably economical to run and comes with bundles of kit. It has some merit for those seeking out a bargain, then, but it's still below par by the standards of the class.
