Poor mpg in our 1.6 tdi se Technology

Post by Bigjimknickers » Wed Jan 17, 2018 5:36 pm

Hello, we’ve had our Ateca since February 17, & it’s been excellent we’ve done about 6000 trouble feee miles but recently I took it for a trip to a job in Bournemouth which is 90 miles away from Guildford.
Now, this is my wife’s car- I did own a shogun so I rarely use the Ateca but I noticed that the mpg wasn’t very good, I’d say it was terrible for a new car!
I was getting about 39 mpg on the average computer & I didn’t go over 75mph. I also made sure I reset the mpg counter.
So is this not to be trusted this trip computer?
What are you guys getting from your 1.6 tdi manuals?

I'm getting 53mpg average in my 1.6tdi since I bought it second hand in October.
I drive pretty steady and try for the best economy when i have the time. My 16 mile commute is mostly 60mph roads, very hilly but that works against me on the way to work and for me on the way home.
MPG drops considerably if I have to rush!

So there is a clear problem then we agree?

I think it's hard to agree there's a problem, everyone drives differently.
How you drive will have a huge effect on the resultant MPG.

But surely 40 & less on a steady run at 75mph isn’t acceptable with cruise on?

Mine is the 2.0 TDI 4Drive, but the fuel economy certainly is nowhere near as good as the BMW 3 litre diesels I drove before. I appreciate the profile of the vehicle (SUV v Saloon) and the slight overhead in 90/10 drive, but if a BMW 3000cc engine with an auto box can give 50 to the gallon at 70, I would expect a manual 2 litre to be closer that 43-44 which is what i see in the same conditions. VAG engines just don't seem to be as frugal or quiet.

Just been chatting about this with my father in law, I think it needs a check from seat, maybe plug it in to see if there is a fault? I see when you look up the 1.6 tdi they state it should give 63 mpg on combined!

As already stated, comparing people's mpg is unscientific because:

1: we all drive differently
2: we all drive in different weather conditions

I drove down to the coast yesterday - pretty fast (unusually for me) on mixed roads to catch a ferry. On the way home I drove in my normal 'economy hat on' manner. 49mpg on the way to the ferry 43mpg on the way home. (I drive a 1.4tsi manual and would have expected low 50's). How do I account for that?

The outward journey was wind assisted with the outside temp around 14C. The return journey was into a headwind in driving rain going thru standing water and the temp was 7C.

As for SEAT's 63mpg claim - that is a government figure calculated in a test lab, not the real world. Not only that, the figure is calculated on the basis the engine is already at operating temp on the combined cycle. Define combined cycle? Was your engine up to operating temp when you rest your MPG guage?

A much better indication of real-word mpg is on websites such as HonestJohn's. For your engine, users have submitted their avg mpgs in the range of 41.6 - 53.4. Again, that's for a 1.6tdi but it doesn't take in to account whether those figures submitted are for 'S', or, 'SE' or SE-T models. Your SE-T will be 18" which will further affect fuel consumption figures. Working out what your MPG should be is a complicated business!

If you're returning around 40mpg, yes that's on the low side but IMO wouldn't indicate there's a problem. What's tyre pressures are you running? Perhaps they're on the low side.
