Winter wheels tyre choice

Post by Neil71 » Thu Jul 05, 2018 10:52 am

I always have two sets of wheels for my car, one for winter and one for summer.
I have the 19" alloys fitted to my Ateca and I don't want them getting covered in salt in the winter, I know it's the heat wave of the century at the moment but it's always better to be prepared.
I have ordered a set of 18" rims for winter use and I'm wondering what brand of winter tyre I should go for.
Tyre size I'm looking at is 235/45 r18.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

Have you ever checked out GYEON Q² Rim?
People claim it works great and works for several months.

No more need for smaller, uglier winter wheels :)

As for your actual question, I have some Falken tyres on my car and they work pretty well. Now that they are older my wheels spin pretty easily.
Can't check the type as they are stored at the wheelshop.

I would go for a higher profile R18=50
I have R19=45
Rhodium Grey, 1.4 DSG, Virtual cockpit, adaptive cruise control, navigation etc. 19"
Denmark.

These are the wheels that I have ordered, similar to my 19's. Tyres that are on my summer wheels are 245/40r19
I have wondered about getting these new winter rims clear lacquered but after watching the above YouTube clip it's maybe worth getting a decent sealant.

Hi Matthijs82,
Just ordered this wheel sealer, hope it's as good as it says on the tin.
I spoke to my local bodyshop and asked if I should lacquer my new rims and he told me to use this wheel sealer too as he said if the lacquer gets chipped then you would probably have water ingress and make a bigger mess than just a stone chip.
Time will tell.

Sticking winter tyres on stock SEAT rims wouldn't (or rather shouldn't) be a problem with most insurers, but what are they saying about changing the alloys because that's deemed as a modification from fmanufacturer specs?

Most insurers (at least here in the UK) want an additional premium for mods.

When I renew my insurance annually I tell them that I have two sets of wheels and I have never noticed any additional premium. Surely fitting wheels with correct winter tyres would benefit the insurance companies by not having to pay out for silly claims with inappropriate rubber.
