SEAT ATECA 2019 model Auto Handbrake Failure

Post by dave.hacking » Mon Mar 11, 2019 5:39 pm

Hi,

I’m looking for some help.

Is there any way of switching off the engine, getting out of the car and locking the doors without the auto handbrake being engaged?

I ask as last night mine rolled down the drive into the house….

Just not sure if it's me or the car that has a fault!

Thanks

Yes simply by not engaging it. Do you have the auto hold on? This normally engages the handbrake when you turn the car off.

I am sure I have read somewhere (user's handbook?) that when you switch off the engine, the electronic parking brake automatically engages, whether you manually pull the switch or not. This could mean a fault with dave.hacking's car.

Since the advent of electronic parking brake I always leave my car in gear (or in 'park' when I had an automatic) when I park anywhere.

I have a 2019 SE 1.5 DSG. If auto hold is off, the parking brake is not automatically applied when parking, putting transmission in P, switching off, exiting and locking car.
If you open car, turn ign on and put in N, you can push it.
If you lift the parking brake lever at this point you hear it apply.
(On this point and a number of others I find the manual very unclear.)

Just looked at handbook.
Under electronic parking brake it says "activate it whenever you leave or park the vehicle" and "the electronic parking brake should always be applied when the vehicle is parked".
Under auto hold function it's not written at all clearly but it does say that it is automatically turned off if the engine is turned off.
So it does not appear that there is a fault on either of our vehicles.
Whether the system configuration is optimal is a different question!

Yes, but it does say "the electronic parking brake connects automatically."

Any issues with autohold, the parking brake should take over. I do wonder if it's somehow possible to defeat the system by some combination of touching the pedals - in the same way as when pulling away - as the engine is turned off.

I think it gets very confusing if you sometimes use autohold and sometimes don't, and you sometimes release the electronic brake manually. You've either got to use it fully automatically all the time, as we do in manual Ateca, or not at all, as we do in DSG TIguan.

Yes I saw that, indeed I think that is the most unclear confusing bit in both sections.

I have never been a fan of electronic handbrakes. But as a rule I always have my foot on the brake and pull the little lever, when I do this the foot brake goes a little.

I do this every time regardless and it stays where it should.

That is written in the auto hold section not the brake section.

The Karoq manual says
"The Auto Hold function (hereinafter referred to only as system)" .....
"If the vehicle is secured by the system (my bold) and the driver's door is opened or the
ignition is turned off, the vehicle is secured by the parking brake to prevent unwanted movement."

I think this indicates slightly more clearly that the parking brake will only come on automatically if auto hold is on.

Also on youtube there is a VW video explaining it on the Mk 7 Golf, and there is a Skoda Autohold video too not for a specific model of car.

In both videos they show the automatic operation of the EPB with auto hold ON. Neither mentions the case of auto hold OFF.

So no awards from the plain English campaign but I stand by my initial conclusion that the EPB won't come on automatically with auto hold OFF. That's certainly how my vehicle behaves and I think that's as designed, not a fault.

It would be much better if the manual pointed this out.

I have AH off most of the time as a DSG holds itself quite well without it.

When I park I just flick the PB on before shutting down.

You can't get simpler than that.
