A Fred99 says, Blu Tac cures the problem. My dealer said they use it and I've not lost any since (did it about six months ago).

Blue Tac is the solution!
They must a be a stupidly loose fit for Blue Tac to make a difference.

They would have to be a stupidly loose to fall out in the first place.

I have never had a problem with mine.

Could be our nuts are colder in the UK so shrink a little. :)

Returning to this:

Took car to tyre place and was a bit surprised to find the VW wheel cap tool (the hook one) in the tool kit, and no sign of the tweezer type thing. Nothing in the glove box either.

Fitter removed them with no apparent difficulty with a hefty pair of long-nose pliers, but I was fearful of damage to the wheel coating. I tried at home with some narrow nosed pliers but couldn't get a balance of gripping the cap without feeling like I was going to break it, so left them alone.

Found the tweezers for sale on eBay for £3 from, oddly, a VW dealer and when they arrived I tried them out and they're a very tight fit between the cap and the recess in the wheel - such that I had to whack the tweezers in with the palm of my hand to get to them click past the head on the cap, then they pull out.
Is it normal for fit of the tool to be that tight?

In view of the comments about the caps falling off I was surprised how tight a fit the caps themselves where. We've lost one - locking bolt cover - but it seems most odd that ones on the other bolts would just fall off.
