MPG

Post by DavidP » Tue Mar 13, 2018 1:51 pm

Hi,

I’ve just driven from the south of France to Cambridge and averaged 51.2 MPG according to the computer. Almost all the driving was in a motorway and I set the cruise control to 75 MPH.

Good stuff.

Did a 65mile trip at the weekend which average 63.9mpg, mostly on 60mph roads. Which was nice to see the advertised mpg is achievable.

Try and compare a full tank to full tank and then work it out by dividing actual gallons into the mileage. On our SEAT Toledo the dashboard mpg consistently read about 8% too high. I have yet to compare this to our new Ateca but I would be very happy if the car's displayed mpg actually worked out the same as the calculated mpg over several tank fills.

It’s all down to the fact that all speedos will be optimistic and that also applies to distance as well. By law, speedos/odometers must never underead, as a result they are all set to overead. They are usually between 5 and 10% optimistic. Get out your phone and check the actual speed on one of the many GPS apps.

I’ll try that method in a few weeks when I drive back.

The onboard computer shows about 3mpg more than what I am actually achieving.

That’s normal as the speedo/odometer is designed to overread by about 5% or more and that is reflected in the mpg figures calculated by the onboard computer.

I’ve now made the return journey from Cambridge to the South of France.

This time I measured the MPG via the trip computer and via the toppling up the tank method. The result was not what I expected. 50.3 MPG per the computer and 50.8 via topping up. I’d expected it to have been the other way around.

That's an excellent read out. We have 1.4TSI and managed a display mpg of 46mpg on a journey of about 160 miles including motorway, A roads (including the Snake Pass) so I was feeling very pleased with that especially as we have only done 700mls.

With the diesel engines we have owned in the past, best mpg was achieved after about 7,000mls so maybe the 1.4TSI will continue to improve. I miss the diesel engine for ease of driving but the 1.4TSI is very good and can pull away from 1200rpm which is not what I was expecting so I am very happy.
