Sat Nav installation

Post by funkyirishman » Fri Jun 23, 2017 10:58 pm

Ok think we are going for the xcellence. However Sat nav not installed as optional. It ain't cheap as an extra and will use Google maps for the time been.

However can it be added later or is it as Elvis said Now or Never?

Is this Republic of Ireland you're ordering in? UK xcellence has sat nav as standard for sure. Unless you're referring sat nav plus?
Ordered 22/4; BW 22; collected 25/6! 1.4 SE-T DSG, Bila, s/roof, pwr boot, lower grill, rear cam, park assist, boot flr, conv pack, disco leds, tinted rears

i.e. an Xcellence with nicer wheels and minus the "old man" leather (per my missus)

Google Maps via Android Auto is what we use all the time it is much better than the Nav plus that is installed and doesn't have the annoying Germanic voice. I would stick with Google maps personally.
2.0L 190 PS 4WD DSG, Rodium grey, heated windscreen, panoramic sunroof, xcellence pack, advanced driving & comfort pack plus 2, navigation system plus pack, electric drivers seat, boot divider net.

If it's not too late - my 2 cents:
Just came back to Dublin from 5600 km journey across Europe. I used built-in nav and google maps 35:65.
The reason for google maps was very good traffic indication. TMC traffic for built-in nav was good but not as accurate as Google.

Google predicted ETA better than built-in and during driving it shouted few time that found better road due to recent increased traffic or accident.

Built-in nav was great with pop-up display with small info about next turn, or restaurant or services along the way. Built-in also better support areas without GPS reception (like tunnels or so) due to fact that some info is take directly from vehicle sensors - like speed. This is documented in manual. Also built-in knows when you use trailer (assuming you have towbar) and selects road for trailers.

Decided not to get it installed and use Google maps or another app HERE WeGo have not tried it yet. Mainly going to be used for driving around Ireland and possible UK in the near future. So at the moment I just download the maps I require and use google maps offline

On another point can we get the Sat Nav installed at a later date ?

I don't know if it can be installed later...

The reason I took it was it was requirement for traffic sign recognition. Where the signs are not available it takes speed limits data from the maps.

As I said - even if I have it - for time critical journeys I used Google maps with traffic.

Is it possible to get the google maps to work with the navigation on your steering wheel dashboard or is it only on the central console?

Android Auto inc Google maps works only on main screen - it does not pass any data to dashboard screen.

Can't understand your reasoning here.

If it 'ain't cheap' adding it as a factory fitted option, you'll likely have to double that price adding it at a later date. Or look at it another way - you've already paid for a non sat-nav unit, you're then going to bin it and buy a standalone unit? If anyone wants a factory SatNav then it makes no economic sense whatsoever adding it at a later date.

You then go on to say you ordered the car without SatNav - that's probably the smart move because as you already say, you can easily facilitate the use Google Maps. Just wondering then why you're still interested in the factory system - what's wrong with Google Maps? Indeed, out of the two options, you'll find many owners (me included) who'll tell you Google Maps is the better.
