Spare wheel or repair kit?

Post by Accord2Ateca » Sat Jul 15, 2017 11:57 am

I ordered my Ateca with standard tyre repair kit, but dealer says he can supply the spare wheel for £179 , replacing the kit. It takes up the same space. Is that what it cost as factory fit and would you recommend it?

I probably will go for it. I've had the kits on my last 2 Honda Accords and have never used them because they make the tyre irreparable.

Spare wheel always a good idea - they let you limp somwhere to get a repair and with the relatively rare size of the 18" rims (215/50/R18) for the 'standard' XCellence always a good idea to salvage the tyre if you need it.

Costs more than factory fit though - factory item was a £110 option I believe. Previous threads have discussed the spare wheel - someone got given a 16" space saver spare until the challenged it (according to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=329 it should be T125/70/R18)
Now driving: Ateca XCellence 1.4 TSi in Rodium Grey with XCellence + Advanced Driving Assistance Packs, Double Boot Floor + Space Saver Spare - Ordered week 9, confirmed built week 26&27&28, arrived in UK week 30 - Collected 1st Sept 8-)

£179 is steep. Cost £110 factory or if you do as I did, pick things up as you go along - £60 for unused spare (gumtree), about £15 (cant remember exact figure) for SEAT polystyrene packing and spare-tyre lock nut from SEAT dealer - I bought jack and spanner from Amazon for around £20 but you could equally pick these up unused from any scrap dealer.

When you say never those kits on your Accord because they make the tyre unrepairable - what did you do when you had a puncture?

It might be more than the factory fit item, but there will be a delivery to the dealer cost factored in along with a profit margin. However, if it gives you peace of mind, then it's worth it.

Either got a mobile tyre changing service out or called the Honda Assist (i.e. AA during Warranty Period) to take me to the nearest tyre place. Also once drive about 700 yards to a garage

Is it a full size spare or is it a temporary, get you home, emergency wheel which is what the factory fit.

If it is full size you need to check whether it will fit in the boot.

Has anyone explored the Road Hero spare kit I posted a link to in a related thread? I've got a full sized spare myself so don't need to check but I wouldn't be surprised if it's competitive compared to the dealers.

I was told by a SEAT salesman—so this is second hand information—that the space-saver spare wheel was only available as a factory-fitted accessory.

Also, having previously had a puncture that could not be fixed with the vehicle’s repair kit and needing to wait for the RAC to plug the gash and foam-fill the tyre, I have ordered the spare wheel.

Interesting. The dealer says that his parts department have them to fit as an after-sale.
