Front assist warning screen and emergency braking applied!!!!

Post by Art » Wed Aug 09, 2017 10:36 am

Had a scare last night when the red warning sign suddenly came on with an alarm sounding and the emergency brakes applied. All without warning and for no apparent reason and very very scary. If this had been on a motorway or if I had a car sitting on my tail it could have resulted in a nasty accident. Ok I am happy for it to be applied to save us from a crash but there was simply no reason whatsoever for it to be applied last night. All very disturbing and although the owners manual says see the dealer (that obviously I will do) I just wanted to know how common this was and if it was a known fault/problem etc before I talk to them. I fear they will simply just turn it off and that is not an acceptable. Thanks.

Hi Art,

You weren't approaching a bend when it went off were you? I've had mine go off in multiple Seat/VW cars when approaching a bend at night. Usually because my lights are bouncing off a road sign.

I've also found if you turn the Traction control fully off (hold the button down for a few seconds in my car) it disables the emergency braking system, but only until you switch the car off.

It was dusk about 6.30pm so not too dark but my lights were on. Can't remember a bend but it is a very interesting thought, thank you.

This hapenned to me twice - the reason was a bunch of trees next to the road and a pile of rocks... it was in a corner and I was going slow. Got me scared but I take it easy.

Thanks for that. Hypersensitive then but when it happens it scared the hell out of you doesn't it. Do you think the garage can tone down the sensitivity to sensible a level?

It's happened several times with me. It normally happens in country lanes where the greenery is hanging off the banks. By the time it happens you normally can't see the thing that caused it, hence the confusion. As there is no risk of actually hitting anything, the brakes are quickly released so the chances of a rear end shunt are reduced. I have since amended the sensitivity to it's lowest setting. It won't occur below a certain speed anyway but that's quite low.

Hi Art, the common theme in other threads has been that the default sensitivity is a little high for some people. You can adjust the level yourself in the car setup menus - I think there's one lower setting you can apply (delayed or some such).

As we head towards autumn, be aware that leaves and other stuff landing on your roof can slide down the windscreen over the camera and make the car go into emergency braking. Happened to my wife yesterday, so I explained it, but I suspect leaves and melting snow or ice might cause issues when the time comes.

Of course it could just be related to our stop-start issue...

I thought the radar for front assist was behind the SEAT grill badge. The windscreen camera is not involved
