I have noticed a slightly heated smell outside of the car on a few ocassions which I put down to what smells like paint or fluid on the exhaust! If it continues I intend to have it checked out - thanks guys!

You have a diesel, right? The "burning chemical" smell on a diesel is normal, it's the DPF regeneration burn that got interrupted when you stopped the engine. If the engine cooling fan also stays on after stopping the engine, it's definitely a DPF regen.

Thanks Tet70 - this makes more sense and would support the sporadic experience!

I had a similar problem with my SEAT ATECA 1 litre manual car so please beware lest you suffer as I did. My car started smoking at less than 3 months old and I took it back to the main dealer. I was reassured that it was likely to be a high spot on the clutch and I was reassured there was nothing to worry about. That was when the car was only 3 months old and had covered around 2000 miles. When the car was 10 months old and had done less than 5500 miles the clutch failed completely and the car had to be towed in to the main dealer. I was told the car needed a new clutch and dual mass flywheel and SEAT would not cover this under their guarantee and I had to pay around £1700 to get my car back. I am currently taking this through the small claims court and my local dealer has referred this to their solicitor who have filed a defence. I am an experienced driver, as is my wife and we deny absolutely that it was driver error that caused the problem. Needless to say this has put me off Seat cars in spite of having our last Seat for 12 years without any clutch problems.

David - it will very interesting to see how this pans out for you because manufacturers rely totally on the "It's your driving" excuse. This case might end up being too big for the Small Claims Court as SEAT have too much to lose. I'm a bit nervous because I'm now just outside the clutch warranty of 5,000 miles and 6 months.

Out of interest, why did you need a new Duel Mass Flywheel?. I thought these are normally fitted to diesel engines. Didn't realise the 1.0 used them as well.

A bit of Googling suggests that Dual Mass Flywheels are getting common on petrols. One source mentioned that they are now fitted more on small powerful units so that explains the Ateca 1.0.

Turns out that the DMF is often changed at the same time as a matter of caution. Might not be anything wrong with it but unknown whether parts of the failed clutch have got inside it. Very expenses "just in case". Not the best design.

Further to the above my case came up in the Leeds Small Claims court last month and the judge found in my favour. Seat had claimed that the clutch was not covered by the warranty so I based my claim on fitness for purpose. The garage claimed that as no manufacturing fault was found the failure must have been the result of faulty driving. The judge had required the defence to obtain an expert witness report from an AA approved engineer. This report stated that a clutch in a properly driven car should last between 70000 and 140000 miles. The judge decided in our favour as the defence did not prove that the car had not been driven properly. I have since sold the Ateca and bought a Volvo! I was awarded the full cost of the repair plus court costs. My Ateca was bought from Evans Halshaw in Harrogate who are part of Pendragon Orient Group. They sent solicitors from Derby to defend the case so it would have been expensive had I lost. The expert report from the AA engineer proved to be very useful.
