Great 1.4 MPG

Post by Randomgary » Wed Jun 06, 2018 6:30 pm

This one caught me unaware, glanced at the mpg after a mixed drive today (through a town, motorway then country roads) and seen this. Average is 44 but very impressed with this.

If you drive slow enough the consumption will be very good. Using the 1.4 engine to its capabilities will hammer the consumption to about half that.

That depends. The average speed is 47mph. If that was on the motorway it would be slow. Around town it would be really fast.

It's difficult to draw any conclusions from that. My point was that the 1.4tsi gets dramatically thirstier if you drive it hard. I have tried driving mine really economically at 60 or below on roads with no traffic and the best I have ever got was just under 50mpg and thats before you correct for the over optimistic MFD display.

True, but the 1.4 like many small turbos gets disproportionately thirsty at higher speeds. The difference between driving at 70 rather than 60 is quite marked.

:) I have found a significant difference in my 1.6 in mpg in driving at 65 verses 70-75 tbf - 42 v 52mpg but for the size of the car i expect that - it's not a small light car so i can see how it gets thirstier the faster you go. I've never looked at it that closely - but still when i first got the car and was only getting 45 ish on my journey to work i was slightly disappointed as i came from a 140 Golf GTD which had a little bit of poke for a heavy car but still returned 54mpg regularly.

A good comparison is my Mk 3 Leon 1.4tsi with the Ateca 1.4tsi.

Over its 3 years the Leon managed 37mpg and the Ateca with exactly the same driving pattern is 32mpg. Similarly, at the eco end of the scale, I could squeeze about 58 out of the Leon but only about 50 out of the Ateca. I imagine the increased frontal area explains most of the difference.
