Impressed so far with 4Drive on summer tyres

Post by ChillCupra » Wed Dec 05, 2018 7:57 am

First bit of winter up north these last few days. My commute involves country roads which have been pretty icey recently. The 4Drive has been very good with zero wheel spin when driving off and lots of traction when accelerating. And this is on summer tyres. I just left it in normal mode. Will use snow mode when it actually snows.

Good to know, but don't get lulled into a false sense of security - you might be able to get going easily but the braking capability will be just the same as on a 2WD vehicle!

That's a pretty crazy thing to say especially at this time of year and might give others false confidence.

Advice my Canadian uncle gave me many years ago when I first drove in Ontario mid-winter - "son, it's easy to know where black ice is, just count the number of 4x4's in the ditch". (and that's using winter tyres!).

I mean seriously... if you you've experienced zero wheel spin and lots of traction when accelerating on summer tyres, then you haven't been driving on ice - it's as simple as that.

Someone with more VW mechanical know-how than me will correct me if I'm wrong, but 4motion on all but VW groups larger and more expensive models is pretty basic. If you haven't even engaged the additional winter modes, then all that your 4wd system is doing is balancing power between the front and rear axle. As soon as you hit ice, you'll know all about it.

I drove defenders for 10 years including off road in the falklands so I no a bit about driving in bad conditions. Please don’t patronise me.

I’m also well aware of black ice and it doesn’t matter what car you have black ice will get you without studded tyres etc. I didn’t say I was on black ice either. The ateca 4wd system is very capable with the right tyres and adequate in light winter conditions with summer tyres. I presume your ateca doesn’t have 4wd and you may be slightly envious.
