1.5tsi Oil

Post by matthab » Thu Aug 22, 2019 2:11 pm

Taking the car over to europe next month, what oil is recommended?

The manual recommends VW 502 or VW 504, so 5w40 should do?

SEAT and VW initially recommended 0w20, which is obviously very thin and may lower consumption/emission a tiny bit. But as far as I can see dealers use 5w30 now which is arguably better for long term reliability of the engine.

I was on service couple of weeks ago, and the service used Shell Helix Ultra ECT 0W30

I have a May 2019 1.5 xcellence lux DSG with 10,500 miles. I have the correct top up oil but I’ve used just over a litre since new. Is this normal for a new engine? Thanks

I read VW508 in my manual. Said anything less could lower fuel consumption. Might also depend on whether your car is on long life service or annual.

Yes I also read it as VW508 from the manual which is 0w-20. Got mine from Opie oils as not many places seem to stock it.

The one I bought is Castrol Edge Professional LL IV FE 0w&20 (VAG) Fully Synthetic Engine Oil.

This has each VAG branding logo on the packaging and also lists it as compliant to VW508 standard.

The Ateca needed about 300ml to bring it back up to the correct level on the dipstick. I did check it when new and the level was fine then. It is a June 2019 build with 4000 miles on the clock.

Luckily, it's also the same oil as my Ibiza FR Sport 1.0 TSI (with PPF/GPF) which has needed about 700ml since new (it's a May 2019 build with 15,000miles on the clock). It seems to have steadied now though and hasn't yet had its first service (coming up in about 3000 miles time).

I'm at 2 months and 3k miles with my petrol engine. Not used any and still looking remarkably clean, but used to diesels !
