Petrol or Diesel

Post by Shuffler » Sat Oct 17, 2020 8:24 pm

Hi folks , in the position of getting a new Ateca 1.5 FR Sport auto .
I can’t make my mind up on a diesel or petrol .
I’ve had both diesel and petrol Kugas (150) and the petrol was by far the better model.
Anyone have any advice .
Thanks for reading anyway !

Unless you are doing at least 10k miles per year or towing a caravan, buy the petrol. Much quieter and nearly as economical and no problems with DPF or Adblue.

Petrol for me as I don't do enough mileage to need a diesel.
If you are not doing big mileage, then I would go for the petrol,
I am loving mine.

I'm in the same situation here, I don't do the miles to warrant a diesel but I've heard of a 1.5 150 petrol leon getting mid 30s mpg so was hoping a 150 diesel ateca would be getting mid 40s realistically? I've had diesels for the last 12 years and like the torque and economy I may be wrong here but I don't see the attraction or a small engine fairly heavy bodied petrol.

My dad's got the 1.5 Kamiq with the DSG gearbox and he's seeing 46mpg. He previously had a 1.5 (3 cylinder) 1 series and struggled to get 38mpg from it.
The 1.5, like the 1.4 before it, is an engine of two personalities - a light throttle and not going above 65mph gives good economy, but the more you do 70mph the more fuel it'll drink. If you can make use of the cylinder deactivation it will help, so take as long a test drive as you can and see how it feels. The DSG also has a coast function which will also help.
Having had the 1.4 manual for almost four years it's had more than enough poke and I've averaged about 44mpg, with the best tank average of 47mpg.

Have had 6 new diesels over the previous 11 years ( to 2019 ) and like you I was concerned about the lack of Torque.
This was my first petrol since 2008, I have absolutley no regrets,
I have had a few octavia vRS's / Passat B8 2.0/150 / Mondeo 2.0/150

Stick the ateca in sport mode and I would be very surprised if it didn't keep with any of them on take off.
Fantastic little engine.

What kind of mpg are you getting? Especially driven in sport? I read it's disastrous over 60mph

To be honest I normally leave it in normal mode, I only ever flick back the gear lever if I need to do a swifter overtake or need to take off in a hurry.

My thing is I only ever drive around town mainly, which is constant stop start trips, and I get around 32mpg this way.
On trips to visit our son who lives 300 km away from us, If I keep it at maximum of 115kph I have seen 46mpg, If I go 120+ ( 125 )this gives me around 42mpg.

My last car was a new Mondeo st line 2.0/150 diesel manual,
On the same driving,
Town only = 28mpg
300km trip / 115kph = 50 ~ 52 mpg
120+ ( 125 ) = 47/48 mpg.

So it is a win win for me.
No more minding dpf, dmf etc.and the smoothness of the petrol is a huge bonus.

Just completed a 300 mile round trip of mainly motorway and dual carriageways with some 60 but 90% of the time my speed was 70 -80 mph, in normal mode, and mpg was 42.
