I believe that if your insurer offers a full replacement deal for total loss of a new car within the first year or so, this may not apply to a pre-reg car as it is not considered to be a new car.

Check carefully.

My insurance from Aviva offered a replacement vehicle in the 1st year, but there was a clause in the terms stating this was only if the vehicle could be replaced within 28 days... Knowing the lead times from SEAT, I thought it wise to buy separate gap insurance.

Annoyingly, when my insurance was renewed, this clause had been removed...

I've just looked again and the replacement vehicle cover is applicable to pre-reg cars, as long as they have done less than 250 miles.

Mine was a Peugeot 3008 2013 vintage 2.0 l D Manual Allure. with Panroof.

In some ways a much more practical car. But I wanted 4WD Auto, so lost a split floor and a bit of boot space and afar bit of storage inside.
