Winter wheels tyre choice
Re: Winter wheels tyre choice
I agree, it’s actually safer making that mod, but you are probably obliged to tell them and if you don’t it just gives them a potential excuse to decline your claim, however sensible the modification was.

The following article was produced by the Association of British Insurers. Very handy but still worth double checking.

Thanks Tobydog for your information.
My insurance is through 1st Central and I have never been charged extra for fitting winter wheels. Prior to 1st Central I was with Admiral and again they never asked for additional premium for fitting winter wheels.

Re: Winter wheels tyre choice
I think the big caveat to take away from all this is that fitting winter tyres is not a problem so long as you put them onto wheels of the original size, or a wheel size that could have been a manufacturer option for your car. Also you fit the same original or option tyre size. Arguably, if you put winter tyres onto 17" wheels, and then fitted them to your Xcellence, you could have a problem even if you increased the tyre aspect from 50 to 60. Simple reason being that 17" wheels were never an option on the Xcellence. Same could apply to the tyre width although I'm not sure why you would want to go wider on winter tyres, especially if snow is a real concern.

Re: Winter wheels tyre choice
Hi mike22,
I see that you have experienced the Ateca in lots of snow.
I don't often get snow here but plenty of slush and standing water, it's my wife that does most of the driving and winter tyres gives me reassurance that she is safer on the roads and it also means that my original 19" diamond cut alloys stay nice and shiny for the summer months as we get a stupid amount of road salt put down on our roads from October to March.
I have opted for Nexen Winguard Sport2 as my tyre choice for my winter 18" rims. The have a B rating for wet roads, perfect for my roads in the North East of Scotland.

Re: Winter wheels tyre choice
On the topic of winter tyre choice I now have a problem in deciding which wheel I want to fit as my winter wheels.
I have purchased a set of MAK wheels (I couldn't refuse them at the price) complete with the fixing bolts for the Ateca.
I don't know which I now prefer.
Opinions please.
