newbie looking for advice

Post by kawasaki750 » Thu Jan 10, 2019 8:18 pm

Evening all

This is my first posting as a newbie about to embark on an Ateca ownership.

I have looked at Skoda Kodiaqa and Karoqa and also VW Tiguan . They are all nice cars but decided in Ateca. This is where the Ateca club comes in. I cannot decide between the 2 litre 150.bhp xCellence in diesel or the 1.5 petrol 150 bhp xCellence Lux. I am slightly in favour of the latter but read concerns about 19" wheels and the resultant drive.

All suggestions, advice and insights most welcome.

Cheers Sean

I have the 19" and they are firm, but I like the handling overall, best to do a few test drives

Thanks Samantha

I took the 1.5 out out other day but hard to firm an opinion when given a 3 mile test drive with rep next to you. I am trying to set up a 4 day test drive through corporate. I do like a firm ride but hopefully it is not like my wife's Leon FR. A great fun toy but will leave your spleen in the gutter after a few weeks constant driving on UK roads.

We have a 2.0tdi 150 FR on 18" wheels. It is perfect for us re ride comfort ( we came from a Mini Cooper S which was firmly sprung)
We were the same re the test drive, a 2 mile loop in mainly 30s and a 40 was hopeless...especially as we told them that we need the car for 1500 mile round trips several times a year. An hour would have been sufficient for us...a mix of 30s, potholes, 60s and the motorway.

How about speccing the new car with 18s...or finding out the difference between 18s and 19s (in your favour) and getting the dealer to find someone who wants to go the other way and do some sort of deal ? I'm sure most dealers wouldn't lose a sale over a set of wheels

I had a really comprehensive test drive - even managed to get a speeding ticket!

I guess it didn't have TSR then !!!! - sorry you got a ticket thou - surely the dealer should have pointed camera out

I got a ex-demo so actually drove the Ateca was hoping to get.
Even then I don't think you can take everything in in 20mins (thou I did get a proper mix of roads) so I arranged to do a 2nd test drive from which I was far more happy filling in the things I hadn't fully noticed the 1st time. I even got them to drive whilst sitting in back for a bit.

Yes, it had TSR, but this was a section of road, normally 80kph, with a 1km section of 60kph. It was a mobile radar trap. The motorcycle patrols carry mobile radars in the panniers. 83 in a 60 zone cost me €50 on the spot fine (no points) paid by credit card. They were somewhat confused that I was driving a car they had never seen before on Czechoslovakian trade plates - it was in June 2016 and was one of the first Atecas in Spain.

My car at the time was a Leon Mk3 which I found had extremely good handling, so I wanted to confirm that the Ateca was similar. I had about an hour driving on some seriously bendy roads and was very pleased with it. It was a 150hp diesel 4x4 and it confirmed to me that the 1.4 petrol would be a better option. I subsequently had another test drive in a 1.4 DSG and loved it after another hour on fast roads (No ticket that time). I signed the purchase contrat on the spot.

There really is no substitute for a long, comprehensive test drive if you really want to avoid buyer regret when it eventuall arrives.

Thanks to all those who helped. I have done it, xcellence Lux 1.5 in midnight (magic) black ordered. Really excited as told should be quick delivery from stock.
Little disappointed that it does not come with double height boot. Dealer told me this is a victim of of the new MLTP ( think that is right) oh well.
