Remap

Post by Neil71 » Thu Oct 17, 2019 3:22 pm

Hi, has anyone here had their 20tdi 150 ATECA remapped?
I know the Ateca is a heavy car but I'm not impressed with the power.
I see that the DSG ATECA has 187hp as opposed to the manual ATECA that has 150hp.
My car seems to lack the diesel torque that I have been used to in other diesel cars.
I would say that the old 1.4 petrol 150 has better performance than the 2.0 diesel lump.

As far as I understand, the 2.0 Tdi DSG is available in both 150hp and 187hp. Mine will be the former, but it'll be the 4drive, so that might affect the performance.
Lava Blue Ateca 2.0 Tdi (150) Excellence Lux DSG 4Drive, ordered 20th July 2019 (week 29) with an estimated 4 month delivery date. Update: Built Week 40; estimated ready for collection from dealer by 18/10 (week 42), i.e. 12 weeks from ordering.

Thinking of getting mine done as I’ve been used to 3litre, I’ve used e-maps.co.uk in the past to remap my Touareg, great guy , will come to you and do it. He clears out all errors so it’s not detectable, if the map does get overwritten he will reinstall it foc.

Should be able to bump up about 40bhp,

Hi Neil71
Yep, I have a Ateca 2.0 TDi 150 which ive had remapped.

Having decided on the ateca as my next car, I test drove several 150 manuals and 190 dsg's and the 150 always felt dull & flat. This always seemed odd to me as most VW / seat / audi dealers say there isnt much difference between the 150 and 190 engines.... We also have a GOLF SV 2.0 TDI 150 manual which we bought new in 2015 - that car is stupidly quick for a MPV and is a hoot to drive (just for comparison, my previous (sometimes embarrasing) list of previous cars include 306GTI, MR2 Turbo, hot Civics etc) so I could never really understand why the Ateca 2.0 TDI 150 manual was so lethargic - surely an extra 75kg over the golf SV and 4x4 cant make that much difference??

Anyhow, so I decided I really wanted a second hand 190ps DSG as I prefer auto and really wanted the extra shove.
Alas it wasnt to be and I found a amazing deal on a brand new 150ps manual TDI, which was too hard to resist.
Love the car itself but it always felt flat, unresponsive and a bit like hard work.
I had never remapped a car and was overly hesitant (especially as it is still under warranty), so spent next 6 months looking for a 190dsg.
In the end I gave up and looked again at the remap options. Asked around a few people I trust who know a bit and the general consensus was pay a bit more & go with a long established reputable company. In the end I went for a bluefin from Superchips (which were neither the cheapest or biggest power gains), and have been very happy with it (installed about 3 months now). Cant comment on long term reliability, but the car is substantially more responsive and clearly has more power as well. I now drive everywhere in ECO mode, but purely because I find the throttle a bit edgey in the other settings.

Probably worth mentioning that most of the re-mappers say that MPG is unaffected in like for like driving (some even say it improves).
However, I brim my tank every time I refuel & every few months I log the mileage into a spreadsheet to see the true MPG. I haven't updated the spreadsheet since remapping, but my mpg has definitely dropped according to the on board computer. The true MPG was always about 4 less than the dash said, and Im guessing the the remap has cost about another 4-5mpg (will re-post when i update the spreadsheet).

Even so Im still really happy with the remap, as its changed the car from being a bit tardy to something I look forward to driving.
If you ever get to Norfolk then Im more than happy to take you for a spin.
Alternatively, im pretty sure the company which did my remap offer something like a 14 day money back guarantee if you dont like it.
Hope this helps.
Rob

I notice bluefin is only available for the 190 diesel and not 150.

Yes, you are correct - I had forgotten that the Blufin website doesnt show the 150 TDI ateca (only the 187), and I now recall clicking through all the VW/ SEAT / AUDI / SEAT variations looking to find my engine code. Couldnt find it, so rang the company and they checked their database for the code & said no problem.
Bluefin handset arrived quick (but sat on my desk a few weeks whilst I was busy). Installation was easy & Im really happy with the result.
I have no allegiance to the company I chose, and (as I mentioned before) other companies offered more power / less cost etc.
My motive was to use a long established company with a good reputation, and to have a car which drove much better without overly stressing the engine.

What about the warranty? Are you worried about that?

Hi Fred
Yes, I must admit the warranty thing did (and does still) play on my mind a little - I guess I came to the conclusion that I was prepared to take the risk (as I said before, this is my first remap, so no previous experiences good or bad).
I like to drive briskly, but dont thrash my car around and only use the full power when I need to (ie certain overtaking).
I figure that letting the engine warm & cool properly plus keeping the oil changed regularly (ie every 10k) will probably do as much good as any potential harm done by the remap. I also figure that if SEAT can rate the engines mechanical parts for 187ps in the DSG model then my 150 should be ok running at about 180-185ps. I know there will be some differences, but the only one i could find was that the 150 seems to have slightly higher compression ratio.
My car will be out of warranty in 2021 and I figure any damage probably wont manifest itself until 10-15 years down the line (hopefully!).
But if you see me posting here next year about a "dead Ateca" then I wont complain if you laugh at me :-)
Best regards
Rob

I think the problem may arise when it goes in for service and the diagnostic tests reveal the modification. The problem could be that you need warranty work on an unrelated item and the dealer may refuse to do it as you have remaped the ECU.

It's a risk you take, but I will be looking at a remap after my 4 year warranty runs out, but not before.

I'm pretty sure that if an issue arose that is or can be proven to be unrelated, they'd be hard pushed to refuse warranty work on it. Obviously there's the insurance company to notify but some really don't have an issue with remaps. Good luck with it
