Brake Discs

Just had my Ateca to my dealer for it's second year service. It's covered 12k miles. During the pre-service inspection, I was advised that there is excessive pitting and rust on the inside edge of the front brake discs, in the gap between the brake pad and the edge of the disc. They said they would need to be checked again in about three months and quoted ÂŁ294 to renew the discs. I would argue if these discs really need replacing after two years then the material they are made of must be sub-standard. Incidentally, brakes discs are not covered by warranty.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I checked the discs myself when I returned home and, yes, they are marked, but nothing unusual from my experience. I have seen discs in much worse condition and significantly grooved after thousands of miles, without attracting attention or failing an MOT. I can see the Ateca failing it's first MOT if I take it back to the same Dealer!

Brake discs and pads are a good money spinner for dealers. I'm sure it's partly a scare tactic. They normally try it on at around 35,000 - 40,000 miles so your experience is somewhat unusual. I used to have an Audi A3 2.0 FSI and it got above 90,000 miles on the same discs and pads. Audi badgered me early on but each annual service just kept saying "They'll need doing next year"!!

If it was me I would certainly ignore it for now. If the main contact area where the pads grab the disc is clean and smooth, I don't see the issue. When the MOT comes around next year you could always talk with the dealer first in order that you don't get an automatic failure. You could then simply take the car elsewhere for an MOT/second opinion.

If it's as bad as the dealer says I would just replace them myself or take it to a different carshop and fit a set of proper aftermarket discs. if OEM discs are really that bad I wouldn't want another set.

Did they provide you with a video of your discs and a measurement of the thickness?
Have a look yourself at the condition and fit some replacements yourself.
I personally think they are taking the piss.

They didn't provide a video. There is no problem with the thickness of the disc or the area that the brake pads actually rub against. For me, all discs on all cars rust and pit where the pads don't reach the edge of the disc. These are nowhere near as bad as I've seen in the past. I think I will wait until a week before the first MOT is due and replace them myself with a pair of decent quality aftermarket discs.

They've got to be close to falling apart to fail MOT - as long as it passes the brake force tests. There was a bit of an outcry a few years ago when the MOT rules were changed and cars were being failed on pitted discs, but they backed off on this.

Your case seems odd - discs are bound to rust on the edge, although GM in US started fitting rust-resistant discs in response to customer complaints, so it is possible to avoid it.

As others have suggested, you're being softened up for a call in 3mths imploring you to have them changed. Everyone in the dealership is targetted and bonused on how much upsell work they can generate - it's nothing short of a scam.

Hi All
Just had a health check 2 year service on my Ateca
Car has only did 9800 miles.
The health check video shows the wear on all the discs.
So have to change all the discs and brake pads.
Still can't figure out why I need to change all the discs out.
How many other Ateca owners have had to do this.
My worrie is what's to say in the next services the Discs need changed again.

As people mentioned i think they are playing you.
2 years and 12k miles of use is nothing special.
Your disks have minimum measurements the dealer has to uphold . ( normally they do)

But nothing keeps you from having you disks machined so the rust on the outside is gone. ( normally this is not costly)
And otherwise make sure you know what uou are doing and change the disks yourself.

I had a big falling out with Honda and one of its dealers earlier this year over corroded rear brake discs and a stuck rear pad. Got absolutely nowhere, so if even Honda won't do under warranty / goodwill I wouldn't hold out any hope at all of a VAG company doing it.

Chances are that if Honda had dealt with it to my satisfaction then I'd have bought an HR-V rather than an Ateca. Bit odd really, I probably wouldn't even expect SEAT to cover under warranty but I genuinely thought Honda would (and should).
